Seals used for powertrain applications are usually divided into hydraulic and pneumatic. Hydraulic seals have to withstand high pressure, heavy load as well as fluid lubrication. This means that the material should have high strength and wear resistant capabilities. Pneumatic on the other generally requires to withstand less pressure but needs to have a higher motion speed. This high motion speed demands low friction in order to keep everything smooth. It is important to note that under high dynamic use the temperature on the materials surface is generally around 10°C higher than the ambient temperature. NBR is the most commonly used material. TPU can also perform well in resisting high strength and wear. If the application requires working temperatures above 120°C either HNBR or FKM can meet the need.
