In the past when R-12 and R-22 was used, seals made of neoprene were used as sealing components. Unfortunately, both R-12 and R-22 contained a lot of chlorine which lead to the rapid destruction of the ozone layer. Nowadays R-410a and R-134a are the dominant refrigerants in the market. To seal against R-410a and R-134a HNBR compounds are most commonly used. HNBR’s adaptability to temperature, elastic restoring capability and its resistance to refrigerants makes for a well-balanced performance in refrigeration system applications. The most recent R744 (CO2) and HFO-1234yf refrigerants also contributes to reduce ozone depletion.
